The Game Theory Society will withdraw its support for and end its association with Games and Economic Behavior (GEB), effective November 15, 2026.
GEB has played a central role in the development of game theory. Its standing reflects the contributions of generations of editors, associate editors, referees, and authors. The Society is deeply grateful for their work.
Our decision follows Elsevier’s decision not to renew Hervé Moulin’s contract and its subsequent search for new editors without the involvement of the existing editorial board. All seven editors resigned in response. These developments raise fundamental concerns about the academic community’s role in the governance of the journal. The Society believes that editorial leadership and scholarly standards should be entrusted to, and accountable to, the research community a journal serves.
The departing editors have undertaken to fulfill their obligations to authors whose papers they are handling. Their continued work on those papers after November 14 should not be understood as a continuing association between GEB and the Society.
The Society is exploring the establishment of a journal under its ownership and governance, committed to scholarly excellence, editorial independence, and open access. This initiative remains subject to the Society’s decision-making procedures. Further information will be shared as plans develop.
